Hello!
My name’s Jane Norman, and I’m the face (and sunglasses) behind Cyano Blue Designs - a Dorset-based creative studio dedicated to making vibrant, Prussian blue artwork, greetings cards and wooden jigsaws, using the traditional cyanotype process with a bit of a modern twist.
Despite the name and blue blouse, my world isn't always strictly blue and white! Cyano Blue Designs actually started by pure chance when I was asked to create a blue & white poster for a local art group. As a photographer, I skipped the digital software and went back to basics, using a camera-less technique that relies on iron salts and natural sunlight.
Shortly after, my Mum asked me to design her a Christmas card in traditional festive colours. She got a blue and white one instead... and the rest, as they say, is history.
From Brownie Badges to Master's Degrees
I’ve always been a "Blue Peter kid" at heart, and that childhood passion of scissors, glue and sticky-backed plastic as well as saving up for my own camera, eventually led me to formal training, where I earned a BA(Hons) in Photography at Farnham, followed by an MA in TV Production at Bournemouth Media School.
Made in the Dorset sunshine
Every single piece I create starts life as a blueprint right here in my Dorset home studio. Using the traditional cyanotype method, I expose hand-coated paper to the sunshine and UV light to capture those lovely, deep Prussian blue tones.
It’s really important to me that as much of my production as possible is kept local right here in Dorset. I absolutely love the magic of making these pieces, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do making them.
